What you Need to Know About Wedding Dress Alterations

Click here to learn everything you need to know about wedding gown alterations in Orlando.

Even after you’ve said yes to the dress, it’s not quite ready to go with you down the aisle with you just yet. Most gowns need to go through some sort of alteration process so that your gorgeous gown is perfectly fitted to your figure. What are wedding dress alterations? These are appointments with a seamstress to have your dress altered to fit properly and sculpted to your figure - it’s a defining part of your bridal look!

Here is everything you need to know about wedding dress alterations in Orlando:

What you Need to Know About Wedding Dress Alterations

Schedule at Least Three Dress Fittings

With the help of our professional seamstress, you’ll be ready for your wedding day with a dress that fits flawlessly! Schedule your first fitting to take place about three months before your wedding day, the second fitting about a month before your wedding, and your final fitting at the two-week mark.

If you have extensive customizations, the most important thing to keep in mind is that if you have extensive customizations, such as long sleeves or a train, the more time and fittings you should allow for the process of creating your dream wedding dress. After your final fitting, you can take your dress home!

Bring Your Bridal Accessories and Shoes

When you head to the salon for your alterations, be sure to bring your wedding shoes and any undergarments or accessories you plan on wearing on your wedding day. If you haven’t picked out your wedding shoes by the time of your alterations, bring a pair of shoes comparable in height to the shoes you envision yourself wearing on your wedding day (or else you’ll end up with an incorrect alteration.)

So why do you need to bring your other accessories if they won’t change the fit of your dress? The answer: they contribute to the overall bridal look. For example, where your wedding necklace falls might affect where you want the neckline of your dress to sit.

Don’t Worry Too Much if Your Dress Doesn’t Fit Correctly at the First Appointment

If your dress doesn’t fit correctly after it’s arrived, don’t worry too much, remember that this is what alterations are for! Most wedding dresses are made in generic sizes and don’t often match perfectly. After you say yes to the dress, the salon compares your measurements to what the designer’s size chart says and often orders based on this information.

Remember, it is always better to purchase a gown in a larger size rather than a smaller size. A larger gown can always be made smaller, but it is much harder to make a gown larger. Once it arrives, that is when the dress is tailored to precisely fit your figure.

Ask a Supportive Friend of Family Member to Attend your Appointment

While you might bring an entire entourage with you to find your wedding dress, we suggest bringing only one or two guests with you to your alterations appointment to get a second opinion. For the final fitting, bring the person who will be helping you get ready on the wedding day—the seamstress can show them how to zip up your dress or bustle your train.

Reasons to Hire a Professional Steamer for Your Wedding Day

Click here to learn why you should hire a professional steaming service for your wedding day!

the top reasons to hire a professional steamer for your wedding day

Brides deserved to be pampered on their wedding day shouldn’t have to spend upwards of two hours working on their gown to make it look just right.  From hotel service breakfast and coffee to professional hair and makeup, all services are available at their disposal. The steaming of your wedding dress should also be one of those!

On the morning of your wedding, you will need to have your wedding gown and veil steamed to ensure it looks its best for your ceremony. Steaming is necessary for every wedding gown but you don’t always have the time to do it, so these are the reasons to hire a professional steamer for your wedding day.

4 Reasons to Hire a Professional Wedding Day Stylist

  1. Hiring a professional means it’ll be done in a timely manner and it looks perfect. What many people don’t realize is steaming a wedding dress is completely different than steaming a t-shirt or everyday dress. Wedding dresses are made up of multiple layers with combinations of different fabrics. Some of these include crinoline, silk lining, tulle, organza,  lace, and more. The combination of fabrics makes steaming timely not an easy task. Did you know that steaming a wedding gown and veil can take up to two hours? When you hire a professional, they will go on-site and steam or press whatever items you need. In addition to the bride’s dress and veil, other items include grooms suit, mother of the bride/groom dress, flower girl dresses, bridesmaids dresses and more! Hiring a professional means they will work in a timely fashion and leave you with perfectly steamed or pressed garments.

  2. Your wedding morning should be stress-free. When you wake up on the morning of your wedding, everything should be stress-free. Your hair and makeup team will meet you in your hotel room, your bridesmaids arrive with coffee, and food is delivered directly to you. You should not have to take two hours out of your day to steam your dress. Most people don’t know how to steam clothes or haven’t perfected it, so why start on your designer wedding dress? Like your glam squad, your professional wedding day stylist will meet you wherever you are to steam all of your items. They will set up an area that is out of your way and get right to work. Once they are done, they will leave promptly so you can continue to get wedding-ready.

  3. Steaming is hot. Steamers are incredibly hot and release steam at over 230°F. When your hair and makeup are complete it would not be ideal to use a steamer after. The scorching heat will cause your fresh makeup to smudge and will leave hair frizzy. If you steam your dress before hair and makeup, you will feel rushed, sweaty, and stressed out. Brides also risk getting burned when they are steaming. Hiring a professional ensures you will stay safe and look and feel refreshed.

  4. It’s often not added to a wedding timeline and often an afterthought. What many brides don’t know is that steaming are not added to a wedding day timeline. As mentioned before, steaming a wedding dress is timely. It’s unlike steaming any other dress or garment. When creating the wedding day timeline, a planner will add what time your hair and makeup will arrive, but may forget to allot time for your wedding dress. We suggest hiring your steamer and having them arrive just before hair and makeup begins. They’ll likely finish before hair and makeup are complete for the bride and all bridesmaids. Once everyone is finished, they can get dressed immediately after.

When planning a wedding, don’t leave your wedding dress as an afterthought. Be sure to budget for professional steaming when purchasing your wedding dress. When you buy your gown, ask your stylist or wedding planner if they know of any professional steamers or wedding day stylists. Hiring one will leave you so relaxed on your wedding day and leave you looking flawless. Your gown has been altered and fitted to perfection so be sure to hire a professional steaming service to rid of those wrinkles.

Styling With Bridal Accessories

To finalize their bridal style, we’d pair a veil and complimenting accessories like earrings, a hairpiece, and bracelet. The intricacy of their beadwork and lace details gives brides the flexibility with accessories. If a bride is looking for a more minimalistic bridal style, we’d choose simple and classic bridal earrings and a delicate hair accessory. However, if the bride is looking for a full glam bridal style, we’d pair glamorous statement earrings and a bold hairpiece to achieve this look.
